Cover Letters

The aim of a cover letter is to get the employer to read your resume, which in turn is aimed at obtaining an interview for you. The cover letter is designed to catch the employer’s attention and present a good impression. You should always send a cover letter with your resume.

Before you commence, ensure that you are familiar with the requirements of the job. Starting with the most important items you should demonstrate how your background, education and experience meet the requirements of the position.

The cover letter should be no more than one page long. The main focus of the cover letter is to introduce your resume and highlight the main points that are relevant to the job. It should state why you are interested in the job and why the company should be interested in you. Personalize the letter and make sure it is grammatically correct and contains no spelling errors.

  1. Introduction
Introduce yourself, name the position you are interested in and the job number or source that the position was advertised in. Briefly explain why your skills make you the best candidate for the job.

  2. Body
In the body of your letter match your background to the job requirements. Highlight your strengths and achievements without repeating what is in your resume.

  3. Close
Thank the reader for their consideration and ensure that you provide them with the best contact details. Be positive and end with a strong statement suggesting that you will follow up within a specific period of time.
